Elmolo are the smallest ethnicity in Kenya - the whole tribe counts only around 300 people. They live in two villages on the south-east shore of Lake Turkana, close to Loiyangalani.
I visited the one on the mainland (the other one is located on a nearby island). Around 50 families live there in huts built with wooden sticks and grass in shape of igloo. The houses are usually divided inside into a bedroom and a daily room.
Elmolo are very friendly, peaceful people and one of the poorest in the area. They live from fishing giant Nile perch and from their goats. Traditionally they hunted also Nile crocodiles which still inhabit the lake in large numbers.
They used spears in the past, now replaced by nets. On clear weather they go fishing alone on small wooden rafts, in windy days use big boats.
Water used for drinking comes from the lake which causes medical problems as the lake is saline. It's the world's largest alkaline lake, by volume - the world's fourth largest salt lake.
The landscapes around is very arid and dry. The lake is the world's largest permanent desert lake.
